Introduction

Cybersecurity threats are becoming more advanced and widespread. Businesses, especially in India, need a security system that keeps up with these challenges. It should also support a mobile workforce and protect data, devices, applications, and people across different locations.

When Microsoft invited top security partners to participate in the Microsoft Cloud Security Hackathon, we knew this was our chance to showcase our expertise. With zero prior experience in Microsoft Sentinel, we took up the challenge head-on.

It was an opportunity for us to build a real-world cybersecurity solution using Microsoft Sentinel, a cloud-native SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) solution that enables organizations to monitor, detect, and respond to security threats across their entire digital estate.

The competition was intense. Out of 23 leading security partners who registered, only 16 managed to complete the hackathon and showcase their solutions. Yet, through our determination, strategy, and problem-solving skills, we secured the 2nd Runner-Up position in our expertise in cybersecurity and cloud security.

Understanding the Challenge

The Microsoft Cloud Security Hackathon was designed to test and challenge security professionals to craft an end-to-end cybersecurity solution. It required:

  • Building an innovative security solution using Microsoft Sentinel to monitor and protect organizations.
  • Developing a security sales pitch to demonstrate the business impact of our solution.
  • Creating a technical artifact to showcase how Sentinel could be implemented in real-world scenarios.

This was a 10-day hackathon that included a 12-hour Sentinel Master Class to help participants understand how Sentinel works in enterprise security environments.

The objective was to create a fully functional security solution that could monitor and protect large enterprises with thousands of devices, applications, and cloud services spread across multiple geographical locations.


The Matrix3D solution: The CISO Dashboard

To address the cybersecurity challenge, we designed an end-to-end security monitoring solution called the CISO Dashboard, built on Microsoft Sentinel and integrated with Power BI.

How It Works

In large enterprises, CISOs (Chief Information Security Officers) struggle with visibility across multiple locations. They need a real-time view of security threats affecting their organization to make quick, informed decisions.

Our solution provided:

  1. Real-Time Threat Detection – Microsoft Sentinel collects and analyzes security logs from various endpoints, cloud services, and applications, allowing instant detection of threats.
  2. Interactive CISO Dashboard – We built a Power BI-powered dashboard that allows a CISO to monitor security incidents across multiple locations from a single interface.
  3. Geographical Security Insights – If an attack occurs in any location, the dashboard pinpoints the exact location and gives detailed insights into the nature of the threat.
  4. Automated Security Response – Using Sentinel’s automation capabilities, the system can trigger alerts, isolate affected devices, and initiate security protocols to mitigate risks.

This dashboard ensures that CISOs and security teams no longer have to manually analyse logs-they get a real-time, interactive security view, making decision-making faster and more efficient.


Building The Solution

Our journey in the hackathon followed a structured approach:

  1. Learning Microsoft Sentinel from Scratch

Since we had never worked with Sentinel before, we had to quickly learn and adapt within the 12-hour Master Class provided by Microsoft. Our team analyzed real-world attack scenarios and explored how Sentinel can be configured to monitor and detect security breaches.

  1. Designing the Security Architecture

After understanding Sentinel’s capabilities, we mapped out our security architecture:

  • Data Collection – Sentinel ingests logs from multiple security sources, including firewalls, cloud services, and IoT devices.
  • Threat Detection – We configured Sentinel to detect common cybersecurity threats like ransomware attacks, brute force attempts, and phishing attempts.
  • Incident Response Automation – Security responses were automated using Sentinel’s SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response) capabilities.
  1. Developing the CISO Dashboard

Using Power BI, we built a visually interactive dashboard that displayed:

  • Threat Alerts & Severity Levels – Critical incidents were highlighted for quick response.
  • Geo-Mapping of Security Events – Security teams could see exactly where threats were happening.
  • Device & Application Monitoring – CISOs could track suspicious activities across thousands of endpoints.
  1. Presenting the Solution Under Time Pressure

We had only 30 minutes to present our security solution, demonstrate the technical artifact, and explain the business impact.This was a high-stakes moment it was either deliver a flawless pitch or lose the opportunity.Despite the pressure, we successfully delivered our presentation, impressing the panel with:

  • A well-structured security solution.
  • A functional CISO Dashboard that could be deployed in enterprises.
  • A deep understanding of Sentinel’s capabilities.

Challenges We Faced

  1. Limited Time to Learn Sentinel – Since we had no prior experience, we had to quickly learn how Sentinel works and implement a solution within days.
  2. Handling Enterprise-Scale Data – Processing large-scale security logs and events in real-time was a challenge, but we optimized our solution for performance.
  3. Building a Solution Under 30-Min Presentation Limit – Explaining a complex security solution in just 30 minutes was tough, but we structured our presentation for maximum impact.

Our Achievements

  1. We Secured 2nd Runner-Up Spot – Competing against 16 security partners, our solution stood out among the best.
  2. Proved Our Expertise in Cybersecurity – Despite being new to Sentinel, we delivered a full-fledged security solution.
  3. Demonstrated Innovation & Strategic Thinking – We combined Sentinel, Power BI, and automation to create a security solution that enterprises could deploy instantly.
  4. Learned the Power of Sentinel – This hackathon gave us hands-on expertise in Microsoft Sentinel, enhancing our cybersecurity capabilities.

What’s Next? The Future of Security at Matrix3D

  1. Enhancing Our CISO Dashboard – We plan to add AI-driven threat intelligence to make security monitoring even smarter.
  2. Developing More Enterprise Security Solutions – We aim to help organizations improve their cybersecurity posture using Microsoft Security solutions.
  3. Competing in More Cybersecurity Challenges – This experience strengthened our confidence to take on even bigger security challenges in the future.
  4. The Microsoft Cloud Security Hackathon was an eye-opener, a challenge, and an incredible learning experience for us. We stepped into unfamiliar territory, mastered a new security tool, and delivered a winning security solution.
